The Pilgrim Suitcase Lesson
To teach the Founding of our country, we have to start at the very beginning. We have to teach our children about the political and religious status of Great Britain at the time (in an age appropriate manner, of course) for them to understand the need for citizens to up and leave their country and pursue a new life halfway across the globe. These concepts are great, but when broken down, they are very understandable. We just have to teach them in a manner in which they can understand.
The Pilgrim Suitcase craft seeks to do just that. During this lesson, we will discuss the cause for a small group of families who risked everything to sail on a ship for over four months to go to a new land and start over. We will discuss the great risks that were taken, the faith required, and the hope they sought to find in the new world. But through this, we will try to help our children understand what a sacrifice it was. These brave pilgrims took only a few items with them as they went on this great voyage. The Pilgrim Suitcase activity helps our children understand how little they were able to bring and what truly is important.
We hope this activity helps teach these concepts well and is a blessing to your family!
